Hockey for Change

Breaking Barriers One Goal at a Time

Our Story
We are two sisters, Elisabetta and Elena Iasci, and have played field hockey in Kent, England, since a  young age. Hockey has shaped our life in many ways, giving us a safe place where to have fun, make friends and (sometimes) forget about a bad day. Over the years, hockey has helped us develop self-confidence, resilience  and strenght ( hockey never stops, comes shine, cold or torrential rain). More than anything, hockey has always put a smile on our faces.

When our school organised an hockey tour to South Africa for Summer 2025, we started to look at hockey over there and we came across the story of Katleho Bontle Motingoe and the Panda Club. Katleho had founded the club  to introduce hockey to underserved communities and create a sustainable pathway for young children to flourish and grow, breaking down the cycle of limited opportunities. This was definetely a world foreign to us.

So we began thinking of ways to nurture our connections with the hockey  community to then use  our South African trip to bring whatever we could to South Africa. Eight months went by and during our July 2025  trip we visited Chuma Primary School in  Kayleitsha , a Towship near Capetown. Their hockey sticks had all been stolen and they had just  received our  first donation. It was an honour to play with such passionate, talented and enthusiastic teammates. They also had a smile on ther face...
From here, we can only keep going - one goal at a time!

About
With Hockey for Change we want to support the growth and accessibility of field hockey to underprivileged communities in South Africa and hopefully, one day, in other countries. There are lots of people and groups in South Africa who have devoted their time and resources to empower youth and create opportunities through sport. Inspired by our own experiences and a shared love for this sport, we would like to contribute to the work of these people and support other talented young players who lack the resources to explore hockey and benefit from it.

To do so, we rely on donations of essential equipment  (sport/pe kits, hockey sticks, balls, shin guards and sport shoes) from our community, local schools and hockey clubs.

We  have partnered with people and organisations in the area of Cape Town and Johannesburg and are working with them to distribute what we collect to their communities.

Donations

In July 2025 we raised £2k through various fundraising activities in school and outside school. We were able to donate 144 sticks and balls, cones, bibs, hurdles and ladders to the South African Hockey Association for their hockey development projects across townships in Cape Town.

Collections of second-hand equipment

We are collecting second-hand sport and hockey equipment from local clubs, schools and the community in our area.

Partnerships

We have been partnering with the South African Hockey Association, Bring it Forward Jozi and the Panda Club for the local distribution of our collections and funds.
